A little bit about Amy Irvine...
As a kid, I always liked numbers. I would spend hours creating math problems and solutions. Whenever I wanted to play math teacher, my brother was forced to be my student! Given my love of facts and figures, it’s really no surprise that I chose a career where I work with numbers.
Interestingly though, my path to my dream career wasn’t as clear-cut as you might expect…
In 1992 I received an Associates Degree in Accounting from SUNY Alfred State College. From there I went to work for a Rail Company called Morrison Knudsen. I quickly realized it was not a good fit for me and was lucky enough to find a job at a small trust company that started me toward financial advising.
Steuben Trust Company taught me about wills, trusts, and IRAs and gave me the necessary experience to transition to a pension and insurance benefits manager with the Corning Carpenters Union (then Local 700). In that position, I was exposed to actuarial science and labor law. Working one-on-one with all the plan participants deepened my love for helping people, especially with the complex rules and choices they are exposed to both during open enrollment and at retirement.
I moved on to Chemung Canal Trust Company, and gained further knowledge and experience working in their trust and retirement services area for a little over five years. However, I really felt a strong pull toward financial planning that included more than just open enrollment and retirement plan administration.
With the support of my husband, Brent, I went back to college at SUNY Alfred and focused on financial planning. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in personal financial planning and took the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) exam.
Post-graduation, I worked with Corning Credit Union's Investment Services Group. While there, I was able to hone my skills as an advisor while obtaining my master’s degree in Personal Financial Planning from the College for Financial Planning.
My next career move was the most influential in determining what kind of adviser I wanted to be. I joined a fee-only financial planning firm called Burns Matteson Capital Management. I loved that investment planning was weaved into financial planning and there were no client commissions. This job gave me the courage to move from being an employee to owning a firm.
In 2016, I transitioned to being the sole owner of Irvine Wealth Planning Strategies. I love being able to offer my clients the services they need and to form strong partnerships with each person I am privileged to work with.
Also in 2016 I sat for all three parts of the Enrolled Agent Exam.
I also enjoy serving on the board for Faith-In-Action Steuben County, the finance committee for Fund for Women of the Southern Tier, and on the Human Ecology Committee for Cornell Cooperative Extension.
