Wine and Dime Episode 13 - The Six Letter "B" Word with the "Money Honey"

The Wine:  Miles Wine Cellars

Ghost Wine - Light, semi-dry white wine that’s a blend of 50% Chardonnay 50% Cayuga. Serve with a cheese and cracker tray or a perfect picnic lunch on the lawn.

The Bottle

The couple wanted a unique bottle to package their Ghost blend, so they hired Fred Wickham, of Canasta Designs in Watkins Glen, to dream up a fitting label.

By the time Wickham, Miles and Hayes had agreed on the finer details, they had designed a one-of-a-kind silk-screened bottle that casts an ethereal feel.

The image on the front of the bottle is a ghost-like silhouette of a woman. Through her skirts and the wine is the bottle, one can see a line drawing of the house, which appears on the back of the wine bottle.

Ghost Wine by Miles Wine Cellars

Ghost Wine by Miles Wine Cellars

Two tiny figures – a man and a woman (see illustration at right) – are embracing on the front porch of the house. The couple’s image is repeated on the cork.”They had an idea they wanted to do a ghost bottle and I knew the story,” says Wickham.

One of the theories Miles and Hayes have heard about their ghosts revolves around a young couple who may have died tragically at the house. They haven’t been able to trace the legend to true roots, but were intrigued by the story and the recollections of the elderly woman who told them of her childhood experiences at the house. She never minded being punished when her parents sent her to her room, because she always had the company of a nice man and woman who would come out of the walls and visit.

The back of the bottle includes advice from Hayes, “Experience the spirits within,” as well as an invitation to visit the wine cellar’s web page to read some of the ghost stories or to add your own experience.

Wine and Dime Episode 12 - Common Cents with Jennifer and Laura

In this episode of Wine and Dime, I will be chatting with Jennifer Harper and Laura Coleman from Common Cents Financial Literacy, Inc.

“Common Cents is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been providing practical financial education since 2005. They typically focus on students aged 16-22, a critical time for developing positive financial habits.

Being able to successfully manage personal finances is a critical skill that affects everyone, regardless of income. Unfortunately, it is rarely taught in an applicable way.

They don’t teach the old ‘if you save x per month at y% for 40 years, you’ll be a millionaire’ kind of classes. While all of that is true, they do our best to make it real.”

You can find Common Cents on the web at http://www.ccfli.org/

The Wines:

Blueberry Cider - From Apple Valley Orchards http://www.applevalleyorchard.com/

Zen of Zin - Zen of Zin was designed with one goal in mind: to capture the non-traditional Zinfandel consumer. For this consumer group, the “Way to Zinlightenment” is a blend specially crafted to be softer and sweeter than traditional Zinfandels in the Constellation Brands portfolio. Zen of Zin also offers a more lifestyle-driven approach to Zinfandel, encouraging wine drinkers to pour often, experiment freely, seek beauty, breathe deeply, and share wisdom.

In this episode, I chat with Todd Sensing.  As a father of two sons on the autism spectrum, FamilyVest’s founder Todd Sensing has a passion for helping families with special needs. After the birth of his boys, he quickly realized just how little guidance and how few resources there are for families like his. This added anxiety to what is already a challenging situation.

About Kate

Kate@irvineadvise.com

Puzzles always intrigued me. Crosswords, logic puzzles, whatever the sort of puzzle I love taking little pieces of information and putting them together to solve a problem.

I was a student at Alfred State College majoring in Humanities and planning on transferring to a law program when a mentor suggested I go talk to someone in the business department about the financial planning program. When I learned what financial planning was I knew it was the right choice for me.

I obtained my first job in the financial services industry in 2005 with a large insurance company.  The position involved heavy sales and little planning. I quickly learned what type of financial advisor I was not meant to be and left to join a financial planning firm working under a CFP. I enjoyed working with clients, doing supervisory work, and creating financial plans.

In 2009 I transitioned to focusing on income tax planning and preparation. I had interned at Alsheimer & Evarts Tax Accounting in college and fell in love with taxes and planning. Since that time I had always worked doing income tax preparation during the tax season, but transitioned to a full time career at Alsheimer & Evarts. I continue to hold this position and love meeting new clients, developing relationships that stretch over years, and facing a new situation every day.

I missed being able to handle the investment piece for clients and I was able to become an independent registered representative in 2011. I ran my own small financial business alongside my position at Alsheimer & Evarts.

My goal in financial planning had been to transition to fee only and I was researching how to transition my business and what direction to take. I had met Amy Irvine in college and considered her a dear friend and mentor, I had been thinking of reaching out to her when I ran into her at a football game. We began a conversation and in 2018 I joined Irvine Wealth Planning Strategies.

My husband Paul and I have two children who keep us very entertained. I am a youth leader at Alfred Almond Bible Church, a Cub Scout den leader, and assist my husband in managing the Hornell Dodgers as part of the New York Collegiate Baseball League.

Wine and Dime Episode 7 - Planning for College with Nannette Kamien

In this episode of Wine and Dime, I will be chatting with Nannette Kamien.  Nannette founded Inspiration Financial Planning after a 15-year career in business and information technology, because she loves personal finance and helping others find their financial inspiration.

More information is available at https://www.irvineadvise.com/college-planning/,  www.inspirationplanning.com/college and you can go to “How to have the College Money Talk.”

The Wine discussed in this episode:

Pinot Grigio - a zesty white wine that is as refreshing as a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summer’s day. The second most popular white wine in America, Pinot Grigio (aka Pinot Gris) is a dry white wine that has a punchy acidity with flavors of lemons, limes, green apples and honeysuckle.

We recommend the Goose Watch Pinot Grigio, which according to the Goose Watch Winery website,  its lightly floral rose petal aromas and pear-like flavors, this varietal has surprising body and richness. A great food wine, especially with seafood.

Wine and Dime Episode 6 - In the Wine Cellar with Jim Caron

In this episode of Wine and Dime, I will be talking to the Jim Caron.  Jim is a Cellar Master at Bully Hill Vineyards, located in Hammondsport, NY, overlooking Keuka Lake.   We talk about the wines, and how the wine industry impacts the local economy.  We hope you enjoy this episode.  You can find out more about Bully Hill by checking out their website at https://www.bullyhillvineyards.com/

The Wine:

Old Mischief:  A masterful Red Blend, with ripe flavors of raspberry and plum; accented by hints of spice.

Cabernet Franc:  Bully Hill makes a downright tasty Cab Franc with the grapes being sourced from Seneca Lake.  The current 2013 vintage was fermented in Redwood open top fermenters for maximum tannin and color extraction.  Once finished and pressed off, we fill up oak casks down in the cellar to bring this fine wine to fruition.   We do small lot production of 500 cases a year and thanks to our happy herd of customers this wine sells out annually!

Gewürztraminer: is a variety with a pink to red skin colour, which makes it a "white wine grape" as opposed to the blue to black-skinned varieties commonly referred to as "red wine grapes". The variety has high natural sugar and the wines are white and usually off-dry, with a flamboyant bouquet of lychees. Indeed, Gewürztraminer and lychees share the same aroma compounds.[1] Dry Gewürztraminers may also have aromas of roses, passion fruit and floral notes. It is not uncommon to notice some spritz

Wine and Dime Episode 5 - Financial Fitness with Mark Struthers

In this episode of Wine and Dime I will be chatting with Mark Struthers.  Mark is a Gen X father that loves using his 14 years of experience, his education, and the freedom to act as a fiduciary to help families build and preserve wealth. He specializes in planning for and paying for college, while still helping families succeed.

The Wine:

Pinot Noir by Lakewood Vineyards:  A classic garnet color suggests the feminine elegance and youth of this wine. Aromas of cherry, plum and toast precede a medium weight palate with a sturdy tannic backbone, finishing warm with hints of stonefruit and wood. Perfect with salmon, duck, and lamb.  http://lakewoodvineyards.com/pinot-noir/

Malbec from South America:

Malbec is a purple grape variety used in making red wine. The grapes tend to have an inky dark color and robust tannins, and are known as one of the six grapes allowed in the blend of red Bordeaux wine. The French plantations of Malbec are now found primarily in Cahors in South West France. It is increasingly celebrated as an Argentine varietal wine and is being grown around the world.
