Wine and Dime Episode 45 - Foster a New Way of Thinking with Justin Foster
In this episode I chat with Justin Foster of Foster Thinking and Root + River. We talk about his coaching strategies, meditation, Bourbon, and of course, Wine. Justin has a very “Zen” approach to the way he coaches and it really comes through in this conversation. Justin also goes into the brand coaching they do at Root + River. It was an amazing interview that I’m sure you will enjoy. The books, podcasts, and wines recommended are listed below. So sit back, pop open a bottle of Bourbon, or the recommended wine, and enjoy the show!
Justin Foster
Based in Austin, Texas, I believe that nothing matters until you know your heart. And when you know your heart, it changes how you live, lead and brand. Along a journey that started on a cattle ranch in eastern Oregon to 49 states and 6 countries, I have worked with leaders of every sector and industry to discover their truth and convert it into vibrant, relevant brands. Co-founder of the branding firm root + river, I am a relentless and optimistic advocate for unleashing the power of truth and authenticity - and the systematic elimination of all that is boring and stale in organizations.
The Root Session
The Root Session takes you to a place you’ve been told does not matter in business — to your heart. The true heart of the matter, the heart of your people, the heart of why you exist.
Within this collective heart is a map in a bottle that leads to a brand. We smash the glass and orient the map for you.
In one day together, we will help show you the future of your brand.
The River
Once you know the root of your brand, you are ready for your message and offerings to flow out into the world. Well, almost ready.
You need a logo that is art, not an afterthought. You need a website that tells stories, that moves hearts … and products.
You need a marketing team that understands all aspects of modern marketing. Box-checkers, spend-it-because-we-have-to defeatists, agency burn-outs need not apply.
But full disclosure: we’re not going to do it for you.
WAKING UP PODCAST
Join Sam Harris—neuroscientist, philosopher, and best-selling author—as he explores some of the most important questions about the human mind, society, and current events.
Awareness: The Perils and Opportunities of Reality
The heart of Anthony de Mello's bestselling spiritual message is awareness. Mixing Christian spirituality, Buddhist parables, Hindu breathing exercises, and psychological insight, de Mello's words of hope come together in Awareness in a grand synthesis.
In short chapters for reading in quiet moments at home or at the office, he cajoles and challenges: We must leave this go-go-go world of illusion and become aware. And this only happens, he insists, by becoming alive to the needs and potential of others, whether at home or in the workplace.
Here, then, is a masterful book of the spirit, challenging us to wake up in every aspect of our lives.

Wine and Dime Episode 44 - From Traveling the World to Coaching the World with Mike Green (Part 2)
Welcome back for Part 2 of my interview with Mike Green! In this part, we chat about what you can expect while working with Mike.
In this episode I talk with Performance Coach Mike Green of M. Welland Green Consultants. Mike and I are from the same home town of Hornell, and in the episode we got the chance to catch up on whats been going on in our lives. The conversation ranged from hitchhiking to Alaska (Just to prove a point), to the approach he takes when helping out a client. I think you will find this episode very entertaining! Boy, I sure did! So sit back and pop open a bottle of your favorite wine and lets enjoy this journey together!
Mike shares a great analogy about how coaching will help you navigate your life!
MEET MICHAEL GREEN
M. WELLAND GREEN CONSULTANTS
In a world where absolutes seem to be slipping away, you can count on this: Mike Green won’t ask you to do anything he wouldn’t do. That’s the good news. The bad news––or superb news, depending on your current frame of mind––is this is a guy who hitchhiked from New York to Alaska just to prove a point. “I hitchhiked to Alaska with no money or food,” Green confirms, before laughing and adding, “on purpose.”
Green’s story reads like missing pages of Hemingway, London, and Melville: a globetrotting odyssey dreamed up and lived out by a scrappy kid from western New York whose insatiable curiosity won’t let him settle for secondhand knowledge. He’s honest, resourceful, and boisterously good company, with a dogmatic belief in the essential goodness of people that’s contagious. Today, Green is also a highly sought-after business coach whose experience has included heavy hitters such as Chevron, Kellogg, Brown and Root (KBR), and others. He moves easily between vastly different arenas––from deep-water rigs to downtown corporate suites.
Over the past 20 years, Green has worked and traveled extensively throughout all seven continents and almost 60 countries, tackling a broad slate of demanding jobs along the way. He says all environments, no matter how extreme, share a fundamental need: people who are brave enough to be themselves.
Green is not just philosophizing: he’s lived his ideology in high-stakes ways. Stints as an Outward Bound instructor leading adjudicated youth through rugged terrain in the U.S, Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Finland, and Scotland, as well as launching a program for juvenile criminals for the Russian government and teaching a college course in which he led students on an 85-day exploration of Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Peru make up his early résumé. Next, he taught global history to high school students in his hometown, and began leading big-game hunting expeditions on horseback through Alaskan mountain ranges. Positions with KBR in Iraq, working with multinational militaries, the U.S. State Department, local government officials, and many others to ensure project progress and safety followed, before working as the Lead Air Transportation and Cargo Lead for the McMurdo Station in Antarctica.
In 2007, Green began his performance coaching career on land rigs in Arkansas––a rough-and-tumble environment in which he excelled. He was called in to work with crews recently hit by time-lost injuries or death. It became his job to help everyone, from the top down, realize why such a costly mistake had occurred, and to recondition the atmosphere and patterns that had allowed it. Success led him to launch his own company, and then, he went off shore. New assignments took him to ultra deep water wells and new challenges.
Green’s unique personal history has shaped his dramatically effective coaching philosophy and practice. A firm believer in the idea that people are capable of so much more than they’ve even imagined, he eschews traditional executive coaching in favor of exhuming each individual’s natural motivators and connecting them to their talents and already finely honed skills in order to achieve new highs. He’s skeptical of one-size-fits-all coaching models, and instead, tailors each engagement to the person at the center of it. Together, Green and his clients examine individual values, abilities, and goals with the overarching aim of creating new, lasting leadership habits. When he takes on a new client, he asks them to take risks, from personal stretching to investing in the coaching relationship, and to accept the unease that comes inherently with growth. “We get wound up in our day-to-day lives and forget who we are sometimes,” he says. “People want to be brave––many of them just don’t know how. It’s my passion to help them find the courage to believe in themselves.”

As often happens with a winery, someone starts with a dream, and for James and Elizabeth Prejean that dream began in California. Jim was born in Carencro, LA and ended up in California the hard way, wounded in a hospital. The USS Cushing, his previous home, was sunk in WWII in the Battle of Guadalcanal and he was severely wounded. After college, he began his career in labor relations. Jim and Elizabeth met on an airplane where Elizabeth worked as a flight attendant and Jim was traveling on business. They married not long after and lived in San Francisco. The short ride from San Francisco to wine country kindled the dream. Jim’s career with American Can took them far away from wine country and brought them eventually to Connecticut in 1974. Jim discovered the Finger Lakes wine industry during business trips to the Finger Lakes and the dream was rekindled. Jim and Elizabeth decided to “retire” to a winery. In 1978, they purchased 53 acres and planted the first 13 in 1979. Traveling from Connecticut on the weekends, they worked the farm for 6 years until, in 1985 they took up permanent residence and built the winery. Prejean winery opened officially in 1986. Sadly, Jim died suddenly in 1989, but he was fortunate enough to see his dream realized. He was quite proud of their accomplishments, and even though he only lived for three years after the winery’s opening, he touched many people. Tom, his wife Amy and Elizabeth and our friendly, knowledgeable tasting room staff are running the winery now and, hopefully, maintaining Jim Prejean’s passion.

Our History
In 1951, the Stamp family moved to Lakewood Farm, a run-down peach and apple orchard on the west side of Seneca Lake. The next spring, they started planting grapes. The original grapes were those favored by the large wineries and grape juice companies. In the mid-80’s the family diversified to add some new varieties, with the hope of someday using them to make their own wines.
In 1988, Monty and Beverly Stamp and their children pressed the grapes for their first vintage.
A Vision Realized
Lakewood Vineyards Winery opened to the public in June 1989 with 7 varieties of wine, made from estate-grown grapes from their 45 acres of vineyards.
Today, with 80 acres of vineyards and 3 Stamp family generations working together, the winery produces a diverse selection of wines. Their dedicated and talented team prides themselves on offering Finger Lakes wines of exceptional quality and value.
Lakewood Vineyards
3Generations Riesling
Bracingly dry, yet dancing with sweet aromas of peach, pear and lime peel. This wine was grown, fermented and blended by 3 generations of the Stamp family working together.

ABOUT THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY
The Willamette Valley, Oregon’s leading wine region, has two-thirds of the state’s wineries and vineyards and is home to more than 500 wineries. It is recognized as one of the premier Pinot noir producing areas in the world.
The Willamette Valley is a huge and varied appellation that includes six sub-appellations: Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge and Yamhill-Carlton.
Buffered from Pacific storms on the west by the Coast Range, the valley follows the Willamette River north to south for more than a hundred miles from the Columbia River near Portland to just south of Eugene. To the east, the Cascade Range draws the boundary between the Willamette Valley’s misty, cool climate and the drier, more extreme climate of eastern Oregon.
At its widest point, this long, broad valley spans sixty miles. Overall, the climate boasts a long, gentle growing season – warm summers with cool evenings; bursts of Indian summer into fall; mild winters followed by long springs. In ideal years the maritime climate provides the best conditions possible for growing the cool-climate grape variety for which Oregon is best known: Pinot noir. In lesser years, fall weather can be tricky, causing winemakers to pull their hair. By this measure the Willamette Valley compares favorably with the Burgundy and Alsace regions of France. And, like it or not, the often finicky Willamette Valley climate is the promised land for Pinot noir in America. Wineries also produce Pinot gris, Pinot blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Melon, Gewürztraminer, sparkling wine, Sauvignon Blanc and some Syrah, Cabernet, and Merlot among other lesser-known varieties.
The Willamette Valley wineries are a popular tourist destination, with the area boasting a luxury destination resort, several high-end inns and many delightful bed & breakfasts. The valley also offers a long list of fine dining restaurants. An additional advantage for the wine tourist is the proximity of the wineries to Portland. From Portland, tourists can visit the Willamette Valley winery of their choice in anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours.

About
ServU Federal Credit Union is a full service financial alternative to a bank. As a member owned financial cooperative, credit unions are not-for-profit. They function to serve their membership. As a result, credit unions are able to pay back higher dividends on savings and charge lower interest on loans. Money that is made by the credit union after overhead is returned to the members as dividends and other financial services. The Credit Union is overseen by a volunteer Board of Directors. These Board members are elected each year by the credit union membership.
Today over 35,000 people in Steuben, Schuyler, Yates and Allegany counties enjoy the benefits of ServU Credit Union membership. We invite you to join these members today - see how you can join!

Before pursuing a Ph.D. in finance, I worked in benefits administration dealing with issues such as setting up medical plans and understanding the tax implications of life insurance. Currently, I teach finance and financial planning, I do financial plans, I answer all kinds of finance related questions, and I manage money. I also do research about what motivates people to save for retirement, how financial planners can help in that quest and the link between money and happiness. Recently, I wrote a fun book about personal finances. You can find it here: Mastering Money – A Simple Guide to Achieving Financial Success
Inga joined the faculty at CSUN in 2015 as an Assistant Professor of Finance and Financial Planning. She has a Ph.D. in Finance from Florida Atlantic University and is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®). Inga's research is mostly concentrated around two fields: corporate finance and financial planning. Her current projects explore the use and perceptions individuals have about the financial planning profession and the drivers that motivate people to save. One of her main goals at CSUN is to increase student interest in the financial planning profession.
Seneca Lake Wine Trail - Polar Passport
Valid daily: December 3, 2018 – March 31, 2019
Time: During each winery’s regular tasting room hours. See list below of participating wineries and their hours.
Price: $30.00 plus sales tax, one passport per person. 16 wineries to visit (4 have limited weekday hours)
Visit the Trail during the best time of year: the off season! The Polar Passport gives residents and visitors alike a convenient and affordable way to enjoy many of the wineries on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. And while many people enjoy visiting the wineries during the busy summer and autumn season, the winter season is actually the best time to visit when owners, winemakers and vineyard managers are more likely to be in the tasting room.
Passports are an especially great value for regional residents that can readily visit our Trail more than once per season, enabling them to explore the participating wineries across multiple weeks. Normal tasting fees at the wineries ranges from $3-$5 per winery for a standard flight of wine samples. One-time visitors to the region that plan on visiting at least 8 or more wineries will likely also find this product to be a good value. If your plan is to visit fewer than 8 wineries, then it is probably wise to not purchase the passport, and instead pay the incremental tasting fees that are common to most wineries in the region.
Here is how it works: A passport is a simple document that for a set price enables an individual to enjoy a complimentary, standard flight of wines at each of the participating wineries listed in the booklet, one time each. Once you’ve purchased a passport, you can visit any of the participating wineries during their regular business hours, at your leisure. Each winery will stamp the appropriate space in your passport. There are no blackout dates, and they are good during each wineries’ regular business hours; you may visit some wineries one day, come back at a later date and visit a few more!
