Every week it's my goal to share a story of someone's journey through their life and financial vineyard. We take you from their roots, to the journey of their vines, and the influences in the air that helped craft their delicious lives. Like wine, life and finances have different palettes that should be celebrated and not judged.
We hope that you enjoy today's show with Patty Hamilton Rogers, who is a blast from the past and then some. Patty is at the core of my vineyard formation and you're gonna hear some of the ways that she, as a another woman, really helped influence the creation of my vineyard.
As we continue to celebrate women's history month, you're also gonna hear a few tips in there about why it's so important to get out and vote, some of the changes that Patty went through as she was developing her vineyard, and some of the exploration that she's gone on and figuring out exactly who she is today.

Patty’s Wine Pick - Josh Cellars Winery
“In 2005, I was in the wine cellar with a friend, someone who happened to be a 3rd generation Sonoma grape grower. We were tinkering around with a new wine that we sourced from a rugged volcanic vineyard in the Red Hills of Lake County California. We were reminiscing about our fathers, and it reminded me of how my Dad used to tinker around the garage, rebuilding old stock cars with his friends.
That rich, approachable wine that we tried back then defines the style and quality that we try to replicate each vintage at Josh Cellars, wines that are bold and expressive, but unassuming and approachable. Funny how it reminds me of someone.
Amy’s Wine Pick Lakewood Vineyard
Lakewood Farm is located on the west side of Seneca Lake, with east-facing slopes gently leading down to the shores. Owned and operated by the Stamp family since 1951, the vineyard’s first grapes were sold to Welch's Grape Juice Company in 1955. As the economic climate for small commercial grape producers became challenging, the Stamps took the next step and began producing and selling wine made from their grapes.
As the wines produced at Lakewood Vineyards gained recognition, so did the acreage in grapes increase—from 45 in 1988 to 80 in production today, with 10 newly planted. Lakewood Farm is still the main source of grapes for Lakewood Vineyards wines and supplies 15 varieties.
Looking Forward
The vineyard crew practices careful management of the vines and land, with a focus on sustainable practices, including composting, mulching and use of cover crops.

Tucked away in the hills of the Allegheny Mountains of Central Pennsylvania, we made our wines public from amateur wine making to professional wine making in fall 2013 when Woody Lodge Winery was born. The love of fine wines has made our lodge the heart of Ashville, Pa and the surrounding area. We are constantly growing and adding to the your experience at our lodge.
We offer a cozy rustic atmosphere with an elevated deck that is perfect for a romantic date, or time with friends. Entertainment is offered weekends, no cover charge and you can call ahead to reserve a table.

Our main varieties include Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Grigio, Traminette for our main whites and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chambourcin, Concord for reds. We also have fruit wines and dessert wines for you to come and sample as well.

To have our wines readily available in the surrounding areas, we have began to offer them in Giant Eagles, Martin's grocery stores, Levity Brewing in Indiana, Pennsylvania as well as some local six packs. Our complete list of locations can be found at our locations tab on the website.
We opened our first satellite location downtown Indiana, Pa in Spring 2018. Its the place to be on your lunch hour, you can bring in your own food, have a glass of wine and socialize.

House Hacking with Kelly Skeval
In this episode of Wine and Dime, I sit down with Kelly Skeval. Kelly is a NYS Licensed Real Estate Associate. In this episode, you can see that Kelly is very driven and takes that drive to make a good revenue stream for her and her family. We go through her beginnings in this field and she shares how she built up her rental units and took that into a career in real estate. Kelly moved to Ithaca in 2005 after attaining her degree in Veterinary Technology and continued her career in veterinary medicine at Cornell University until her first child was born. Kelly had an active interest in real estate long before her and her husband, a Trumansburg native, decided to purchase their first home. When they did, they turned it into an owner occupied duplex and were able to use that foundation to further expand their real estate portfolio to include 5 properties and 10 units.
In addition, Kelly and her husband owned a home energy auditing business. Being a BPI certified energy auditor she was able to assess homes and building envelopes then make recommendations to homeowners on how to make improvements that would save energy and make their homes more efficient.
It is Kelly’s knowledge in many aspects of real estate including but not limited to single family buying and selling, rental properties, new construction, property management, building envelopes and business ownership that make her an ideal person to help you in your real estate endeavors. Purchasing or selling a home is a big decision and Kelly prides herself on offering quality customer service along with knowledge and compassion.
In her spare time, Kelly enjoys spending time with her husband and their three small children exploring the Finger lakes region and all that it has to offer.

A Grieving Mom is Never Alone with Carrie Gibson
Welcome back Wine and Dime listeners. This was a very different kind of episode than we normally have. I had the distinct pleasure of chatting with Carrie Gibson. Carrie is the Author of NEVER ALONE IN THE DARKNESS: The Shared Journey of Losing a Child. The book tells Carrie’s story of what no Mother should ever have to go through, the death of a child.
In this episode we talk about the grieving process, and the support systems to help people get through these traumatic events. We also talk about some of the financial situations that arose since that day, and continue to present themselves. This book and this episode is very emotional. So stop on in and listen to this incredible story of sadness and resiliency.
My ability to adapt to different situations in life came from growing up in a professional baseball family, which made it necessary to jump in and out of schools across the country each year (sometimes 4 moves per year). I also am a mother of two boys, having lost the eldest in 2017, when he was 29 and unmarried. I was forced into learning what needed to be done to handle his finances and affairs without any guidance.
No grieving mom is ever alone in the way she feels daily. There are thousands of grieving moms who feel the same way she does. Although each person "deals" with the loss differently, we have all felt the same emotions at some point. Also, since the death of one's child affects every aspect of one's life, it is imperative that individuals who have never experienced the loss of a child understand what a grieving mom goes through emotionally and mentally. Finally, a grieving mom needs to know there are some things that need to be considered and addressed (especially when it comes to an adult child who is single) from a legal and financial perspective.
In my book, Never Alone in the Darkness The Shared Journey of Losing a Child, I write about how to handle an adult deceased child's student loan debt, taxes, paychecks, leased vehicles.
NEVER ALONE IN THE DARKNESS
The Shared Journey of Losing a Child was written by a grieving mother who lost her oldest child in 2017. Feeling isolated, walking on the edge between reality and insanity, she had no idea if what she was feeling was normal. Had other mothers experienced the same emotions when they went through the nightmare of their loss? Finding purpose in her pain, she put her deepest emotions into words so other mothers would always have a reference to read, at any given point in their grief, to identify with a mother who knew firsthand what they were feeling. It was her hope these grieving mothers would then never feel alone in their own journey. She also discovered her words provided a better understanding of grieving mothers to those who had never experienced the unimaginable darkness of losing a child.

I've always had a rebellious streak and a tendency to push back against the status quo. While this didn't always serve me well in my teen years, I realize this is what drew me to this work and helps me to be successful in changing the way we view aging and the way we care for and support older people.
Jill joined the Eden Alternative at the 9th Eden Alternative International Conference in May 2018. Formerly at Christian Living Communities as Executive Director of Clermont Park Retirement Community, she led the community through a $75 million redevelopment project and complete cultural transformation using the principles of the Eden Alternative. In her role as COO, Jill was responsible for guiding the operations of multiple communities and achieving excellence through the use of person-directed principles and practices. Jill earned a Master of Management in Hospitality degree from Cornell University School of Hotel Administration and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Alfred University. She is a licensed nursing home administrator, certified assisted living administrator, LeadingAge Leadership Academy Fellow, Eden Alternative Path to Mastery Guide, and a Certified Eden Educator. She has been involved with the Eden Alternative since 2007. Jill is passionate about creating community cultures of innovation, possibilities, inclusivity, growth and empowerment and writes and speaks nationally on the topics of culture, leadership and ageism.
With 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 each day, the need for senior living is growing at a steep rate, and the aging services field has been hard at work preparing for these new customers. Current practices aim to bring the kind of comfort and amenities enjoyed at hotels and resorts to the settings we create for older adults to live in. But what if these efforts are misdirected?

Shining a light on her own professional field, Jill Vitale-Aussem exposes the errors of current thinking and demonstrates how a shift in perspective can effect real cultural transformation. Her book delves into society’s inherent biases about growing older—where ageism, paternalism, and ableism abound—and provokes readers to examine how a youth-obsessed culture unconsciously impacts even the most well-meaning senior living policies, practices, and organizations. Deconstructing the popular hospitality model, for example, Vitale-Aussem explains how it can actually undermine feelings of purpose and independence. In its place, she proposes better ways to create opportunities for older people to exercise choice, autonomy, and self-efficacy.

In a culture that typically views aging as a period of decline, the Eden Alternative philosophy asserts that no matter how old we are or what challenges we live with, life is about continuing to grow. Building on this new paradigm, it affirms that care is not a one-way street, but rather a collaborative partnership. All caregivers and care receivers are described as “care partners,” each an active participant in the balance of giving and receiving. Together, care partner teams strive to enhance well-being by eliminating the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom.
Focused on changing the culture of care since the early 1990’s, this approach to person-directed care initially came to life in nursing homes and has since expanded its reach to all care settings, including home care and residential care for people living with different abilities. The Eden Alternative firmly believes that culture change unfolds one relationship at a time, and that deep change can only take root when the entire continuum of care is involved. Through education, consultation, and outreach, it currently offers three applications of its principles and practices to support the unique needs of various living environments, ranging from the nursing home to the neighborhood street.
